Therefore, to save humankind from the Danavas, Lord Vishnu took the avatar of a Kurma. Moreover, Lord Vishnu knew that if the Danavas became immortal, then they would overpower the Devas and also cause massive damage to the human race. The victory of the Danavas meant the decline of goodness and peace. In one of the battles that took place after Daitya Guru Shukracharya was blessed with the Sanjeevani Mantra, the Daityas (Danavas) defeated the Devas. For the uninitiated, the Devas symbolised Dharma while the Danavas represented Adharma. He had vowed that he would take an avatar on earth to restore Dharma by uprooting Adharma. Lord Vishnu had pledged that he would appear every time someone threatens the existence of humanity. ![]() ![]() Centuries later, he appeared once again on the earth as Kurma (tortoise). The first was Matsya Avatar, wherein the Lord appeared in the form of a fish to free the Vedas (Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda) from the clutches of the Danavas and kill a demon-named Hayagriva.
